Essence Fest 7 Female RB Acts You Need To Know

first_imgNews Essence Fest: 7 Female R&B Acts You Need To Know Twitter The annual music event introduces a slew of rising R&B starsGRAMMYs Jul 8, 2018 – 11:27 am Essence Fest is the ultimate celebration of Black women and music. And while it manifests that mission through dynamic headline shows featuring some of music’s biggest acts (Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu), it also serves as a major introduction for a slew of up and coming artists. And this year was certainly nothing different. Over the course of the three day event, we have spotted seven rising female acts whose music you need to explore right now.Ella MaiThe summer (and in part Essence Fest) belongs to Ella Mai. Her chart-topping breakout single “Boo’d Up” has induced instant sing-a-longs all week, and the recent release of a remix featuring Nicki Minaj and Quavo of The Migos, shows that the British R&B singer is not slowing down. Denisia If you’re a New Orleans native, Denisia is certainly not a new artist. She first garnered mainstream attention back in 2015 when she was featured on YaBoyBigChoo’s cover of Adele’s hit “Hello”, remixed in the locally popular bounce music style.H.E.R.The mysterious R&B singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose identity at one point didn’t go beyond a shadow and silhouette, is fully stepping into the spotlight—albeit with her face still slightly concealed by oversized sunglasses. After her soul-stirring performance at the 2018 BET Awards went viral, H.E.R. (an acronym for “Having Everything Revealed”) hit the Essence Fest Superlounge to a massive crowd.YaninaA student at the esteemed Berklee College of Music in Boston, rising songstress Yanina made her Essence Fest debut this year. Currently working on a yet-to-be-titled EP, she is making her mark thanks to her powerhouse voice, dancing ability and a striking stage presence.June’s DiaryGroups formed via reality shows typically have a shelf-life that expires at the end of a TV season. But every so often there are exceptions. Enter June’s Diary. Formed on the Kelly Rowland-executive produced BET show Chasing Destiny, this talented line-up of singers have the harmonies, moves, and style that puts them on par with the great girl groups of the past.Mykia JovanMykia Jovan is proving to be a name bubbling in the progressive soul music scene. The New Orleans native’s unique vocal quality has been compared to the likes of Erykah Badu and the late great Billie Holiday. Her debut album Elliyahu is currently available at mykiajovan.com.Victory BoydAfter one hears Victory Boyd’s voice, it becomes clear why Jay-Z signed the New Jersey-native to his Roc Nation music label after hearing her perform just two songs. Many have placed her vocally in the lane of Tracy Chapman, Roberta Flack, and Nina Simone. However, her approach to soul and folk music is so fresh and youthful, that she is in a lane of her own.Catching Up On Music News Powered By The Recording Academy Just Got Easier. Colorware Editor’s note: Apple has unveiled a refreshed version of the AirPods with a new H1 chip and a wireless charging option that costs extra. Read the AirPods 2019 review. If you’re in the market for Apple’s AirPods — or another pair of truly wireless headphones — you may want to wait a bit. Apple’s is expected to release a new set of AirPods, mostly like called the AirPods 2, this year and possibly as soon as March 25, when it’s scheduled to host a special event at the Steve Jobs Theater on its Cupertino campus.Word is the company will use the event to unveil a host of new digital services — including, possibly, a new TV streaming service and an updated version of Apple News that builds on its recent acquisition of Texture. But there’s always a chance it could sneak in some hardware announcements — like new iPads and those much-anticipated AirPods 2.Here’s a quick roundup of all the latest AirPods 2 chatter. To be clear, all these rumors are unconfirmed and Apple doesn’t respond to questions about unannounced products, so take this all with a grain of salt.Read more: Best fully wireless headphonesRumored design updatesNew colors: Some sites are claiming that the AirPods 2 will come in black and possibly other colors. Aside from that, the AirPods 2 will allegedly look nearly identical to the original AirPods.New grippier finish: The new buds could have a new soft-touch coating with a subtle grip to it that helps the AirPods 2 stay in people’s ears more securely (see posts by MySmartPrice, Economic Daily News). This would be a key and welcome upgrade that seems too good to be true.Rumored feature updates (likely)Always-on voice-control: No need to double tap on a bud, just say “Hey, Siri” to activate Siri. There’s consensus among Apple watchers that this feature will be added and 9to5Mac recently discovered that iOS 12.2 includes ‘Hey Siri’ setup interface for the rumored AirPods 2.Wireless charging: The long-awaited and already announced AirPods wireless charging case will almost assuredly be included with the AirPods 2 — possibly alongside the long-delayed AirPower charger.Upgraded Bluetooth connectivity: As a report from Bloomberg suggested last year, Apple is expected to upgrade the new AirPods with a new W2 chip with Bluetooth 5.0 support. The current AirPods support Bluetooth 4.2. Improved bass performance: Tweaks to the AirPods’ internal design will supposedly improve the bass (see MySmartPrice post). The lack of bass is a weakness with the current AirPods, so it wouldn’t be surprising for Apple to have engineered the next AirPods to sound a little better.Better battery life: Some have suggested the wireless chip upgrades could mean the AirPods will be come more energy efficient and be able to eke out more battery life. I wouldn’t expect a big bump, but an extra hour or so would seem doable.Improved water-resistance: That same Bloomberg report said Apple was looking to make the new AirPods more water-resistant. Apple doesn’t state exactly how water-resistant the current AirPods are, but plenty of people run with them (and sweat on them) without a problem already. ahastyle-earbuds-earhooksEnlarge ImageThis accessory helps not only helps keep the current AirPods in your ears but it improves the AirPods bass performance. David Carnoy/CNET Rumored feature updates (less likely)”Wellness” monitoring: It’s unclear just what these monitoring features might end up being — or what sensors Apple might add — but this rumor has been making the rounds ever since Apple was granted a patent in July of 2017 for future AirPods biometric sensors. The Jabra Elite Active 65t has a motion sensor for tracking fitness performance, but Apple’s biometric patents appear to be more sophisticated.   Noise control: One of the AirPod’s downsides is that their open design allows a lot of sound to leak in from the outside world, which has a major impact on sound quality in noisy environments. That aforementioned Bloomberg report from last year also hinted the next-generation AirPods could feature some sort of noise-cancelling element. Now there’s talk of this feature appearing in the third-gen AirPods, which would also include better water-resistance and perhaps those biometric sensors. That model would potentially be larger and wouldn’t come out till 2020, according to speculation from respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.  Rumored pricingMySmartPrice, which doesn’t have the greatest track record with rumors, reported that the AirPods 2 would cost more — around $200.However, others suggest the AirPods 2 will costs $160 — or the same as the original AirPods. I personally think the price will remain the same. With all the new true wireless competitors out there, it would be a mistake for Apple to raise the price. Latest AirPods 2 news and rumorsMarch 14: Taiwan-based Digitimes, which keeps tabs on companies that make components for Apple products, claims the AirPods 2 are set for mass production and will be unveiled at Apple’s March 25 event, according to its sources. Digitimes has been wrong in the past.Feb. 12: Popular tech leaker @OnLeaks says that the AirPods 2 will launch this fall and come in new colors, according to a “new and yet unconfirmed but seemingly reliable source.” @OnLeaks predicts that Apple will launch the new AirPods wireless charging case “soon” but that it will ship with current AirPods, not upcoming AirPods 2. Hasinas meeting with president over SC verdict condemnable BNP

first_imgThe BNP has described Wednesday’s meeting of the prime minister, the law minister and the attorney general with president Abdul Hamid on the Supreme Court’s verdict annulling 16th amendment to the constitution as an ‘unprecedented incident’, reports UNB.The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, on Thursday condemned and protest at the ‘incident’ of this meeting between the heads of the state and the government.Addressing a discussion, the BNP leader accused the Awami League government of indulging in anti-state activities by openly taking a stance against the judiciary and chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha.“The prime minister together with the law minister and the attorney general met the president yesterday (Wednesday), and discussed the Supreme Court’s verdict that cancelled the 16th amendment to the constitution. This meeting has made the entire nation deeply worried. Such a meeting can’t be held, it is an unprecedented matter,” he said.Fakhrul added, “They’ve met the president taking an opposite stance against the Supreme Court verdict. We strongly condemn and protest the incident.”Barrister Salam Talukder Smrity Sangsad organised the programme at Jatiya Press Club, marking the 18th death anniversary of BNP’s former secretary general Abdus Salam Talukder. The BNP secretary general alleged that the government is hatching a plot to snatch the independence of the judiciary. He said Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader met the chief justice at his residence earlier and took dinner there after the verdict, while “ministers are passing offensive remarks about the chief justice. What the ruling party junior leaders are saying about the apex court and the chief justice can’t be allowed in a democratic system.”The BNP, Fakhrul said, fears that the government has taken a new plot to completely destroy democracy and the independence of the judiciary. “We call upon the government to put up a strong resistance against such a move.”He urged all the political parties, democratic institutions and civil society members to come forward to protect the country, its constitution and democracy. “We all must get united to defeat the evil and undemocratic forces.”Fakhrul said though the ruling party leaders often file sedition cases against BNP leaders and activists over trivial matters, Awami League leaders are openly indulging in anti-state activities.“You’re working against the country and destroying the constitution. You shall be brought to the court of people today or tomorrow, and punished for all of your anti-state activities.”He also came down hard on law commission chairman and ex-chief justice ABM Khairul Haque for holding a press conference against the Supreme Court verdict violating his service rule.Fakhrul also alleged that Haque committed a judicial offence by changing the verdict on the 13th amendment to the constitution after going to retirement. “He should be put on trial.”He recalled the political life of Salam Talukder and his contributions towards making BNP a stronger political organisation. On 20 August in 1999, Salam Talukder died on the way to Singapore for medical treatment.last_img read more

Papua New Guinea female police chief urges women to rise up

first_imgIn a nation where sexual violence is endemic, women are still targeted and attacked for witchcraft, and female representation in parliament is non-existent, police chief Julie Palakai is blazing a trail for change. Photo: AFPIn a nation where sexual violence is endemic, women are still targeted and attacked for witchcraft, and female representation in parliament is non-existent, police chief Julie Palakai is blazing a trail for change. The 43-year-old inspector, a domestic abuse survivor and 18-year veteran of the force, is one of the most senior female police officers in Papua New Guinea — and is calling on the nation’s women to take a stand against sexism with her.”Women must strive and rise up against any discrimination, abuse and sexual harassment in the workplace,” she tells AFP.”For young girls who are still struggling: Do not give up but strive for the best to achieve your goals and to find a better and happy life. Nothing is impossible,” she insists.Human Rights Watch named Papua New Guinea “one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a woman” in a report which estimated 70 per cent of women would be raped or assaulted in their lifetime. The NGO added that sorcery-related violence remains an issue, adding that women and girls are the “primary targets”, though men too have been attacked in witch-hunts.None of the country’s 111 parliamentarians are women and there are few women in the police force.Palakai is the only female commissioned officer — an umbrella term for senior management from inspector grade upwards — in all of Papua New Guinea’s northeastern Islands Region. She has worked hard to get to her position battling institutional discrimination, abuse, and rigid cultural expectations.Palakai now heads the Public Safety Unit at Kokopo Police Station: It’s a role that’s highly visible — she leads the prestigious Guard of Honour parade.Dressed in crisp police blues and wielding a large silver sword, she proudly marches judges, superior officers and other dignitaries — almost always male — up and down Guard of Honour lines. It’s a rare sight in the male-dominated nation, and a role that requires total respect from subordinates.”When inviting and escorting an important officer or VIP on parade, we are actually inspecting each individual on parade,” she says.Palakai came from a broken family and while she finished secondary school, any plans for further education were disrupted when her home town of Rabaul, was devastated by twin volcanic eruptions in 1994.Instead, she took a job as a sales rep for a stationary firm in the area but soon became restless. By chance, she saw an advert from the police in the local paper and decided to respond to their search for new recruits. She was shocked to be selected, Palakai conceded, but happily took the six-month training course near capital Port Moresby before being posted to Lihir, an island best known for gold-mining.”I was just a young policewoman officer posted out there to lead, manage and command officers older than me, very experienced and long-serving policemen and women,” she said of the role as station commander.”You have to learn to think fast during states of emergency or in everyday situations whilst on normal police duties, and make prompt and wise decisions,” she added.Palakai was ambitious, but like many women in Papua New Guinea, she found her partner was not receptive to her career aspirations.”I had to leave him as I could not see any better future with him given…the disrespectful behaviour that I could not stand any longer,” she told AFP.”He often argued telling me that I was just a woman and policemen and women will not listen to my instructions and orders and that women had no power to lead,” she recalled. In May 2013 she became a commissioned officer, graduating along with four other female officers placed around the country, and 20 male colleagues at a ceremony overseen by prime minister Peter O’Neill.Since then she has championed the push to encourage women to actively invest in their future. She explains: “Education does not stop when you are young or old. Where there is opportunity, go for it, as education is your future.”last_img read more
