WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Apple is asking weekly questions to the seven candidates running in contested primaries for the Wilmington/Tewksbury State Representative seat (19th Middlesex).Below, in her own words, are the responses to this week’s questions from candidate Erin Buckley (R-Tewksbury).#13) The Massachusetts education funding formula hasn’t been updated in 25 years. This Chapter 70 formula fails to provide the funding needed for school districts to fund core expenses. The Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center published a report last week (“Building An Education System That Works For Everyone: Funding Reforms To Help All Our Children Thrive“) detailing the problem. The Wilmington & Tewksbury School Committees have long advocated for the State House to update the Chapter 70 formula. Do you commit to fighting for an updated formula? What else will you do as State Representative to help our public schools?Yes, I support the fight to re-evaluate the Education Funding Formula. This has not been done since the Education Reform Act of 1993, under Governor Celluci. I would also favor additional language that would make the formula automatically reviewed after a certain number of years. The economic conditions of our Commonwealth change, school systems change, and therefor the language to keep Chapter 70 an advanced and productive means to fund our educational system must change as well. I believe that the fiscal 2019 Budget does address some funding shortfalls with $100m more dollars to chapter 70, as well as regional school bussing, charter school reimbursement, and Special Education Circuit Breaker funding; however these changes are only for next year and we need to take a good look at how the formula should work for the long-term betterment of our schools’ futures.#14) Define “negative campaigning.” Do you pledge not to engage in any negative campaigning during this election? Why or why not? When responding to an attack, will you follow the “when they go low, we go high” Michelle Obama mantra or the “when someone attacks me, I always attack back… except 100x more” Donald Trump mantra?I take umbrage with this question — and beyond the not-so-subtle implication that Democrats engage in a superior form of politics than Republicans. Politics is the arena for a battle of ideas. Voters should take into account a variety of factors about a candidate: intelligence, experience, community involvement, history of accomplishment and service, etc. If a fellow candidate lacks these crucial characteristics, that is well within the arena and must be discussed. If a candidate holds beliefs that another candidate finds potentially damaging to the contested district or state or body, that must be shared and if it warrants strong speech, so be it. “Negative campaigning” is in the eye and ear of the beholder and it is too often defined along party lines. For me, truly negative campaigning is any action or speech that promotes no agenda and only works to reduce the process itself. And that is something I refuse to both engage in — nor suffer quietly. Read the AirPods 2019 review.If you’re in the market for Apple’s AirPods — or another pair of truly wireless headphones — you may want to wait a bit. Apple’s is expected to release a new set of AirPods, mostly like called the AirPods 2, this year and possibly as soon as March 25, when it’s scheduled to host a special event at the Steve Jobs Theater on its Cupertino campus.Word is the company will use the event to unveil a host of new digital services — including, possibly, a new TV streaming service and an updated version of Apple News that builds on its recent acquisition of Texture. But there’s always a chance it could sneak in some hardware announcements — like new iPads and those much-anticipated AirPods 2.Here’s a quick roundup of all the latest AirPods 2 chatter. To be clear, all these rumors are unconfirmed and Apple doesn’t respond to questions about unannounced products, so take this all with a grain of salt.Read more: Best fully wireless headphonesRumored design updatesNew colors: Some sites are claiming that the AirPods 2 will come in black and possibly other colors. Aside from that, the AirPods 2 will allegedly look nearly identical to the original AirPods.New grippier finish: The new buds could have a new soft-touch coating with a subtle grip to it that helps the AirPods 2 stay in people’s ears more securely (see posts by MySmartPrice, Economic Daily News). This would be a key and welcome upgrade that seems too good to be true.Rumored feature updates (likely)Always-on voice-control: No need to double tap on a bud, just say “Hey, Siri” to activate Siri. There’s consensus among Apple watchers that this feature will be added and 9to5Mac recently discovered that iOS 12.2 includes ‘Hey Siri’ setup interface for the rumored AirPods 2.Wireless charging: The long-awaited and already announced AirPods wireless charging case will almost assuredly be included with the AirPods 2 — possibly alongside the long-delayed AirPower charger.Upgraded Bluetooth connectivity: As a report from Bloomberg suggested last year, Apple is expected to upgrade the new AirPods with a new W2 chip with Bluetooth 5.0 support. The current AirPods support Bluetooth 4.2. Improved bass performance: Tweaks to the AirPods’ internal design will supposedly improve the bass (see MySmartPrice post). The lack of bass is a weakness with the current AirPods, so it wouldn’t be surprising for Apple to have engineered the next AirPods to sound a little better.Better battery life: Some have suggested the wireless chip upgrades could mean the AirPods will be come more energy efficient and be able to eke out more battery life. I wouldn’t expect a big bump, but an extra hour or so would seem doable.Improved water-resistance: That same Bloomberg report said Apple was looking to make the new AirPods more water-resistant. Apple doesn’t state exactly how water-resistant the current AirPods are, but plenty of people run with them (and sweat on them) without a problem already. David Carnoy/CNET Rumored feature updates (less likely)”Wellness” monitoring: It’s unclear just what these monitoring features might end up being — or what sensors Apple might add — but this rumor has been making the rounds ever since Apple was granted a patent in July of 2017 for future AirPods biometric sensors. The Jabra Elite Active 65t has a motion sensor for tracking fitness performance, but Apple’s biometric patents appear to be more sophisticated. Noise control: One of the AirPod’s downsides is that their open design allows a lot of sound to leak in from the outside world, which has a major impact on sound quality in noisy environments. That aforementioned Bloomberg report from last year also hinted the next-generation AirPods could feature some sort of noise-cancelling element. Now there’s talk of this feature appearing in the third-gen AirPods, which would also include better water-resistance and perhaps those biometric sensors. That model would potentially be larger and wouldn’t come out till 2020, according to speculation from respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Rumored pricingMySmartPrice, which doesn’t have the greatest track record with rumors, reported that the AirPods 2 would cost more — around $200.However, others suggest the AirPods 2 will costs $160 — or the same as the original AirPods. I personally think the price will remain the same. With all the new true wireless competitors out there, it would be a mistake for Apple to raise the price. Latest AirPods 2 news and rumorsMarch 14: Taiwan-based Digitimes, which keeps tabs on companies that make components for Apple products, claims the AirPods 2 are set for mass production and will be unveiled at Apple’s March 25 event, according to its sources. Digitimes has been wrong in the past.Feb. 12: Popular tech leaker @OnLeaks says that the AirPods 2 will launch this fall and come in new colors, according to a “new and yet unconfirmed but seemingly reliable source.” @OnLeaks predicts that Apple will launch the new AirPods wireless charging case “soon” but that it will ship with current AirPods, not upcoming AirPods 2. All of them were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.Inspector at DMCH police outpost, Bacchu Mia, said four including Abir were brought to the hospital in a critical condition.The physicians on duty pronounced Abir dead at 7:45pm. Others are undergoing treatment at the hospital.Official of the fire service headquarters, Rasel Sikdar, told Prothom Alo that three pedestrians were injured in a gas line explosion at Munshibari of Jurain in Shyampur. The local people took them to DMCH, he added.According to Abir’s family and police, Abir and his family lived at Dhupkhola in the capital. Shati Akhtar and her two children went to her father’s house in Shyampur. The explosion took place when they reached Munshibari. On September 9, Apple debuted its Watch in another attempt to close the gap between fashion and technology. The iconic tech company came out with three versions of the new device including the Watch Edition, which comes with an 18-karat gold case and may sell for as much as $5,000 according to one Apple insider. It’s too bad the fashion world was unimpressed.Roseanne Morrison, fashion director for The Doneger Group, told Reuters that “It’s not pretty…It’s very future techno as opposed to feminine sexy.” According to New York Magazine, models Arthur Kulkov and Alexa Chung both gave Apple Watch a thumbs down for being too dorky and toy-like. Designer Todd Snyder said, “I would never replace my Rolex for that watch.”Related: Can the Apple Watch Win the Wrist?Despite coming up short in the eyes of fashionistas, Apple still forced the fashion and tech industries to again question the conflict between style and utility. This has implications that could stretch far beyond the watch industry — if, and only if, designers are willing to take the risk of pioneering “smart fashion.” It is potentially a multibillion-dollar opportunity but there is no guarantee it will work out.With makers of textiles, handbags, jackets, shoes and jewelry now in a position to shape the future of all wearable technology, it’s worth asking two big questions: Why hasn’t fashion already seized this opportunity? And if they do enter the wearable market, how should they proceed?Why fashion remains on the sidelines. The fashion industry has a contradictory relationship with technology. Today, retailers are effectively tech companies that study and analyze shopping behavior. They have developed algorithmic personalization engines, mobile apps and social-media strategies well ahead of other industries. Yet, fashion designers have felt no competitive pressure to integrate technology into their products. What would compel Giorgio Armani to make digital suits with built-in smartphone chargers and biometric sensors? Trying to force technology into high- end fashion products could backfire and alienate one of their core demographics who have not expressed demand for such features.Fashion designers aren’t expected to solve practical problems. They create demand for their products on an emotional and aesthetic level. Even the techiest among us can’t deny that fashion helps us define and represent who we are. When my wife wears a designer dress, or when my friend wears a solar-powered, smartphone-charging jacket (for real), both are expressing beliefs and values via fashion.Technology has so far failed to address the desires of people who express themselves through style rather than functionality. The Apple Watch is the best attempt so far. Likewise, fashion has failed to serve the needs of people who express themselves through functionality before appearance. So, people who value both style and function — probably the majority of consumers — are arguably underserved.Making a multibillion-dollar collaboration work.Since fashion and technology have always existed as distinct entities, unifying the two is a risk even if there appears to be a widely underserved demographic. Overcoming this divide is impossible without collaboration. To win over the elite fashion crowd, Apple and other tech companies need the sensibilities of top designers (Google recently teamed up with Diane von Furstenberg for Google Glass designs). And if fashion designers want a piece of the multibillion-dollar wearable technology market, they need the capabilities and regard for user experience that tech companies bring to the table.Related: How Russell Simmons Plans to Style and Inspire Millennials Through FashionWhile Apple may be considered a guinea pig in this new smart fashion market, the press is now speculating that Intel and other companies will try to one up Apple in the high-fashion wearable market. But many famous fashion houses are noticeably on the sidelines of this competition, with a few exceptions. Tory Burch now produces metal and silicon-printed bracelets to hide the Fitbit’s rubber bands. Ralph Lauren just launched the ‘Polo Tech’ line of athletic shirts that measure heart rate, breathing and movement. They plan to put this technology into dress shirts later in 2014.This is why there is such a huge opportunity for designers to partner with tech companies. If you’re a fashionista, would you prefer your smartwatch band to have the logo for Apple or Armani? If tech companies want wearable devices to gain acceptance with a wider audience, who could be better partners than designers who are so compelling that they convince women to buy five-figure handbags and endure the brutal discomfort of high heels?The choice before the fashion industry is simple:Partner with tech companies and take a piece of the wearable market, or let tech companies flounder with design and style. Designers could make or break the smart fashion trend. My personal hope is that design houses join in and provide those of us who love tech and fashion equally with a higher degree of self-expression and choice. After a long break from fundraising, yesterday Cloudflare, a U.S. based company that provides content delivery network services, Internet security, etc, announced that it raised $150 million of funding. The company also announced the joining of Stan Meresman, board member and chair of the Audit Committee of Guardant Health (GH) and Maria Eitel, founder and co-chair of the Nike Foundation as the board of directors. In 2014, Cloudflare raised around $110 million funding and the company has raised more than $330 million till date from investors including New Enterprise Associates, Union Square Ventures, Microsoft, Baidu, and many more. During the latest round of funding Franklin Templeton, an investment management company joined these investors and further extending its support to Cloudflare’s growth. Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, said, “I’m honored to welcome Maria and Stan to our board of directors. Both of them bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our board and know what it takes to propel companies forward. Our entire board looks forward to working with them as we continue to help build a better Internet.” Eitel has previously run European corporate affairs for Microsoft and worked in media affairs at the White House, and also had been an assistant to President George H.W. Bush. Eitel said, “My career has been focused on creating global change, and the Internet is a huge part of that. The Internet has the ability to unleash human potential, and I believe that Cloudflare is one of the major players able to drive the change that’s necessary for the world and Internet community.” Stan Meresman was previously CFO of Silicon Graphics (SGI) and Cypress Semiconductor (CY). He said, “Cloudflare’s technologies, customer base, and global network have helped propel the company to a position of leadership in the Internet ecosystem. I look forward to lending my skills and expertise to Cloudflare’s board in order to continue this growth and make even more of an impact.” According to a report by Reuters, last year, Cloudflare was considering an IPO in the first half of 2019, that could have valued the company more than $3.5 billion. According to this latest funding round, it seems that the company isn’t yet in the direction of going public, but Cloudflare is growing and public offering could possibly be the next big step. Few users are expecting the company to go public this year and are happy that the company is moving in a good direction. One of the users commented on HackerNews, “I do wonder how people feel about this internally though. There’s a lot of expectation that the company would go public this year (and some even expected it would go public last year). Hopefully, no one needs the money they put in to early exercise any time soon!” Another comment reads, “Cloudflare is undergoing a lot of big projects to break away from the image that they are “just a CDN”. Raising a round now instead of going public allows them to invest more on those projects instead of focusing on quarter to quarter results. Also, avoiding brain-drains post-IPO while they need those talents the most.” Few others think that the company might start monetizing over the data flow. A user commented, “Doesn’t raising this kind of money scream that you’re eventually going to start to monetize the data flowing through your network (e.g. telecoms selling location data to bounty hunters)?” To know more about this news, check out the official announcement.
