The difference between creationist and evolutionist projects on the National Mall could hardly be more stark.Christians, who affirm God as Creator and Jesus as Lord, will be gathering this week in Washington DC for 24-hour prayer for the nation: bowing humbly in prayer to God for healing of our divisions, for repentance and for revival in the spirit of II Chronicles 14:7. Called ‘Awaken the Dawn’ 2017 from Psalm 57:8-9 and Psalm 108:2-3, the event will feature a tent for every state in the union where people can gather for prayer, worship, and national confession at all hours of the day and night. Organizers at the EventBrite page hope that this gathering will be the start of a new Jesus movement and national revival. We are calling the nation to the National Mall in Washington DC on October 6-9, 2017. We will gather from all backgrounds, not around speakers, but around the presence of God and the worth of Jesus. We will gather around the invisible God knowing that he will respond. In addition to the tents on the Mall and outreaches across the city, the event concludes with A massive gathering on the final day of worship and prayer, preaching the gospel with healing, and a commissioning to send thousands of youth to carry the gospel and complete the Great Commission! Our Evolution?A very different event is planned on the Mall afterward. This one features the installation of a 45-foot statue of a nude woman (see United Press International). The organizers are raising $90,000 to transport and erect the statue, where it will stand near the Washington Monument, lit up at night in lavender lights for four months. Ostensibly, the sculptor wanted to make a statement about the abused status of women, showing how a woman feeling completely safe would look. Its placement facing the White House, though, gives it a not-so-subtle political message. The statue was first installed at the Burning Man Festival in the Nevada desert, an annual orgy of radical self-expression where people wear outlandish costumes (or nothing at all), in unrestrained activities often with pagan overtones. What’s most telling about the occasion, though, is not just the nudity of the art (since nude statues are not that uncommon in city parks and art galleries, even around Washington). Some who honor the Bible might, after all, celebrate the intelligent design of God’s creation of the human form in a manner reminiscent of Eden. The statue shows the woman just standing – nothing more. In those respects they might tolerate the event in spite of its in-your-face, larger-than-life dominance of this national public space. No, what is most telling about the project is the name the artist gave to it: R-EVOLUTION. This can be read as either ‘Revolution’ or ‘Our Evolution’ in contrast to the “re-” words in the Christian event (repentance, revival, renewal). The Catharsis on the Mall project page makes it very clear that the organizers are cultural radicals who want a revolution for evolution:In bringing R-Evolution to the National Mall, Catharsis organizers hope to inspire dialogue among women, and people, of all bodies, ages, races, religions, genders, abilities, and sexual orientations about the role of art and community in nurturing the heart and healing, and in turn creating lasting social change. It’s difficult to see, though, how this artistic statement will help women by saying that they don’t exist. For explanation, see essay by Dr Everett Piper, president of Oklahoma Wesleyan University. As it was in the days of Elijah, so it is now. We have God-fearing people on one side, and Baal worshipers on the other. God-fearing people humble themselves in obedience to their Creator, but Baal-worshipers follow after their own lusts. Today, Baal is known by the name Darwin. How long will you halt between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him. If Darwin is god, follow him (I Kings 18). Just don’t be lukewarm about your commitment (Revelation 3:14-20). (Visited 433 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0
By: David Lee Sexton, Jr., MS & Bari SobelsonPixabay[Kid by Madalinlonut on October 20, 2015, CC0]Slack, Holl, McDaniel, Yoo, and Bolger (2004) provide extensive evidence documenting the relationship between poverty and child maltreatment, indicating the existence of a negative relationship between income and multiple forms of child abuse and neglect. This means that as the household level of income decreases, instances of child abuse and neglect are statistically more likely to occur. This is a startling revelation which suggests that children in low socioeconomic status families may be more susceptible to child maltreatment. However, it is more alarming to note that the existence of a relationship between poverty and child maltreatment is about the extent of what is known. Slack et al. (2004) point out that a virtually endless number of outside variables could affect this relationship. For example, it is unknown which aspects of poverty are responsible for this relationship. To address this issue, Slack et al. (2004) combined survey research and child maltreatment data to examine the roles poverty and parenting characteristics might play in this relationship. They found support for the assumption that certain factors within these variables were more responsible for the relationship between poverty and child maltreatment. However, it is perhaps most interesting to note that this study indicates that reports of child neglect to Child Protective Services (CPS) were NOT significantly correlated with household income range or material hardships. This finding represents a foundation for families struggling economically to stand on, as it suggests that economic hardship alone will not lead to negative outcomes for their children.More recently, Cancian, Slack, and Yang (2010) found that families who received greater amounts of governmental child support payments experienced fewer investigations from the child welfare system related to child maltreatment. Also, when accounting for poverty, mothers with larger families and younger children- factors that likely increase the difficulty of the parenting process- were more likely to become involved with the child welfare system. Finally, mothers who did not earn a high school diploma were also more likely to become involved. This reiterates the idea that other factors, such as education and family size, may play a role in the relationship between poverty and child maltreatment. So, what does this mean for us as service providers? What can we do differently within our practice? Slack (2017) acknowledges that the central focus of child maltreatment prevention programs is parenting. This focus includes the use of interventions such as parent support groups, parenting classes, parent-child attachment therapies, home visiting, play groups, and respite programs. But, what if the parenting focus just isn’t enough? It is important to consider Slack’s suggestion that “parenting interventions may not work if economic context is in chaos”. Taking this into consideration, it would be beneficial to “inventory economic hardships during [the] service assessment phase (in CPS as well as in prevention programs)”. By acknowledging, listening, considering, probing, and understanding through assessments, service providers can gain a clearer path of intervention for families. Additionally, service providers can infuse the social-ecological framework by emphasizing more than just parenting strategies in prevention efforts.Slack (2017) believes that through work towards changing policies, practices, and societal beliefs on community responsibility in preventing maltreatment, among other things, can lead us down a road of hope towards addressing poverty in child maltreatment prevention.ReferencesCancian, M., Slack, K. Indian women went down to the Singaporeans 0-3 in the team table tennis final on Friday, thereby having to settle for a silver medal at the Yamuna Sports Complex. However, the bigger disappointment was the men losing to England 1-3 in the team semi-final.The 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallists will now face Nigeria in the bronze medal match on Saturday. The Singapore team had players of Chinese origin and two of their players are in the top-10. The highestranked Indian player was Mouma Das at 214. Mouma gave a tough fight to World No. 3 Feng Tiawei before losing 5-11, 3-11, 11-9, 7-11.World No. 5 Wang Yuegu easily defeated K. Shamini 11-7, 11-7, 11-5.Poulomi Ghatak took the first game 12- 10 against World No. 23 Li Jiawei. But the Singaporean came back strongly to take the next three games 11-7, 11-9, 11-5 to seal the gold medal for her side.Malaysia beat England 3-2 to seal the bronze. The defeat of the men’s team was unexpected. When Achanta Sharath won his first match against Liam Pitchford 11- 8, 11- 4, 11- 8, it seemed that another easy win was on the cards. In the second match Anthony Arputharaj came back from a deficit twice against Paul Drinkhall and had reached match point at 10- 6 in the fifth game. But then nerves and a controversial umpiring decision went against him. The break was all that Drinkhall needed as he sealed the contest 11- 8, 4- 11, 11- 5, 7-11, 12-10.With the match poised at 1-1, Subhajit Saha went down in straight games 4-11, 10-12, 8-11 to Andrew Baggaley. It put a lot of pressure on Sharath’s shoulders in the fourth match and for once he could not deliver.advertisementDrinkhall, who had beaten the world number 40 previously, repeated his feat and closed the deal with a 11-9, 11-5, 10- 12, 11-4 victory.
Two weeks ago, world-famous web animator Monty Oum, who worked for an Austin-based production company called Rooster Teeth, passed away unexpectedly after suffering an allergic reaction during a routine medical procedure that left him in a coma. In response, his employer asked that anyone who was looking to pay tribute did so creatively – instead of simply sending flowers or gifts.Charlie Strong and the Texas Longhorns, who are also based in Austin, have obliged. The program put together a tribute ball signed by every player.
